Cloud data analytics and Power BI dashboard for the Citrus Growers' Association.
Faster reporting, right-sized costs, automated backups, and a planned serverless data lake with QuickSight.
Challenge
The Citrus Growers' Association of South Africa, a non-profit organisation, approached CloudZA to migrate their SQL database and BI reporting to the cloud. Their initial migration reasons were due to a lack of redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities, as their SQL database was running from a local machine.
The solution also needed to be a managed service as they do not have any IT support to handle database administration. As an NPO, they required a cost-effective solution that would meet their requirements without the overhead of managing infrastructure themselves.
Solution
CloudZA conducted a database migration for the Citrus Growers' Association, with professional services relating to the creation of a Well-Architected Landing Zone, Amazon S3 data lake implementation and security hardening of their AWS account.
CloudZA architected a solution utilising Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) and Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) for backup storage. Automated backups were configured, ensuring that no data would be lost in the event of a disaster. The roadmap includes a serverless data lake solution using S3 and QuickSight, allowing them to scale to thousands of users.
Result
The customer saw speed improvements for their Power BI reports, and after monitoring their monthly utilisation, CloudZA was able to right-size the database to save further costs.
Automated backups now ensure that no data would be lost in the event of a disaster — eliminating the previous manual backup process. The Citrus Growers' Association now has a clear migration path to a fully serverless analytics platform that will scale with their growing programme footprint.
